Character Variety Meme by Fyuvix Character Variety Meme by Fyuvix
Just link back to the original if you use it, but mostly have fun! This is to help people realize possible design flaws if your characters are too similar. I highly recommend challenging yourself with this one! Choose characters that you think are very similar to better help you understand where you might need help. See if your viewers can guess your character within the first half! Don't rely on eyes, and hair to differentiate your characters!! Make every subtle nuance unique! This applies for all styles! You can't tell me "But I draw humans, or anime." Look at any GOOD anime character designs and you'll see that you can fill this out for them too! Some good examples to use this meme on for preexisting characters: Cruela Devil, Jafar, Facilier, Cowboy Bebop cast, any of Hanna Barbera's characters or any pre 90s toon, Batman villains, etc.

If you post a link to your meme, I may not respond. I hope you don't find that rude, I just can't check them all I'm afraid, but feel free to post it for others' reference n.n

This is amazing! Really helpful for people with OCs, especially if your style leans towards anime-like as most of the characters look exactly the same without their hairdo, or outfits, or colours. I'm going to try this out as soon as I can

This meme looks so amazing!! I'm having a little issue though... for the 4 character template, DeviantART says that it's unavailable to view... by chance, would there be any other way to download it?

I will do it when my characters are more different.
A while ago I showed some silhouette naked and hairless to my brother, and he could guess easily who my character where, but to me they still look too similar, so I studied some character design and I discovered it was because the differences were made mainly by height and size (some character are thinner than others, but if I stretch or enlarge their body they become alike).
I'm practicing a lot on this, even studiyng silhouettes of other character.

What I haven't understand is: when I study character design, I must study it naked and hairless first, or I must start assuming that my character is dressed and with hair?

Well when studying character design, you're ultimately looking for the overall silhouette, but this challenge is to show that characters should still look different without the clothes because too many anime artists just do paper-doll template style bodies and faces, and just draw different bangs and outfits, and assume its a different character XD

I see.
Is normal that when you remove clothes and hair silhouette becomes duller? I though it was only me, but I saw is the same with all other characters, unless they aren't super cartoony.

Agreed; the more cartoony they are, the more noticeable it is, but it should still be distinct as no two bodies are the same. Here's an absolutely perfect example: www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/b…

I know this site. I even downloaded those pictures on my computer.
Untill now I tried to make my characters different by getting inspired by real people. Every character is inspired to a different person.
Me and my brother can see differences, but I'm still unsatisfacted and confused.
Now I'm studying well Disney style to see if it can help to solve my doubts

If you're unsatisfied, simplify, simplify, simplify. Try drawing your character in 5 totally different styles and seeing if they're still readable. Being able to caricaturize and abstract a character adn still make them recognizable is a great sign. try the following styles for a real challenge:
-Nicktoons / Total Drama Island / Kim Possible / Fairly Odd Parents
-Shounen Anime
-Franco Belgian comic Examples: Tin Tin, Lucky Luke, Gaston, Spirou, etc (You might want to look up Frank Margerin's Lucien)
-Anthro (this is a really fun one XD)
-80s-90s Cartoon: Animaniacs, TMNT, etc
Also helps to do one in the style of your favorite artist. man. I think I'll do this XD

I already did it and they turn pretty different, so I try to study their shape that way. In my head they look clear, but I like a style that is not too-deformed (like your 'TBT', they have regular proportions), so is harder.

Well go for things that are relatively close. Try Don Bluth style instead of Disney since Disney tends to be a bit cleaner line style or even some Dreamworks movies like Prince of Egypt

I did a six character version - phazyx.deviantart.com/art/Big-… might be a bit large haha.

My characters aren't visually all that similar, but this helped me a lot with keeping them consistent and finally starting to develop definitive looks for them. Thanks so much for making this!
